Joseph Kennedy

Joe was born on Sept. 20, 1944, in Frankfort, KS, the son of W. F. and Opal Kennedy. He graduated from
Frankfort High School in 1962, and attended Donnelly College in Kansas City, KS. 
He married Marybeth Vader on Sept. 12, 1964. 


After living in Kansas City for 6 years, they moved to Frankfort in 1970, when he began his career in
banking at First National Bank, Frankfort. He served his family’s organization for 40 years, ending as
Chairman of the Board Emeritus. 


Joe was a lifelong member of Annunciation Catholic Church, Frankfort. He was also a member of
Knights of Columbus and Rotary Club. He was involved with Boy Scouts of America and many other
community activities. He was involved from the beginning, of the Frankfort Community Care Home,
serving multiple terms on the board. 


Professionally Joe was involved in Community Bankers Association of Kansas, serving as chairman
1996-97. He served on the original board of directors of Bankers Bank of Kansas, also served on the
board of directors of the Independent Community Bankers of America, including the agricultural
committee for ICBA for 20 years.  


Joe loved fishing, golfing, hunting, card club, and he loved anything grandkids. He was an avid KSU fan
and enjoyed many sports and attending numerous sporting events. Joe had a way of bringing laughter to
every situation. Whether it be a somber funeral, enjoying time with his grandkids, golfing with friends
and family, or at bank conventions, humor was always on the agenda with Joe. 


Survivors include his wife, Marybeth, of the home. Daughter Ann, (Frank) Kohman, Wheaton, KS.
Daughter Kathi, (Duane) Broxterman, Rutledge, GA. Son Jay, (Maggi) Kennedy, Frankfort.
Grandchildren Samantha (Kohman), (Wes) Weishaar, Silver Lake, KS.  Rebecca (Kohman), (Caleb)
Broxterman, Kansas City, KS.  Dylan, (Vandana) Broxterman, Athens, GA.  Austin Broxterman, Smyrna,
GA.  Maura Kennedy, Norman, OK.  Olivia Kennedy, KSU student. Great-grandchildren William
Weishaar, Ada Weishaar, Perry Broxterman, Sullivan Broxterman. Sisters Jean Gose, Sr. Janet Kennedy,
Sara Mullen, Martha Miller, Jane Adams. Brother Bill Kennedy. 


He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Anne Thoma, Sr. Susanna Kennedy, Judy Kennedy,
Nancy Padden, and Patricia who died in infancy.
